Winter time

Winter time

Meaning of Winter Time

Winter time is in fact normal time and it lasts for five months. During summer time there is a deviation from this standard time. Winter time starts on the last Sunday in October and ends on the last Sunday in March.
History

In the past there was never winter time. There was just a standard time. This standard time has been introduced in the Netherlands since 1909. It was only during the Second World War that there was summer time and therefore also winter time. The oil crisis in 1973 caused almost every country to use summer and winter time. There is still debate about summer/winter time. Some pets or domesticated animals on the farm may be affected because they are fed or watered at a certain time. These animals are still in the rhythm of summer time, while the owner has switched to winter time. Animals in the wild are of course not affected by this because they do not always get food at, for example, 7 a.m. They simply move gradually with the sunrise and sunset.
Mnemonics

Every year people wonder whether the clock should go forward or back. During winter time, the clock goes back one hour, so you can sleep an extra hour. During summer time, the clock goes forward one hour, so you sleep one hour less. There are several mnemonics to help you remember this. A mnemonic is: “when the weather goes backwards, the clock goes back one hour and when the weather goes forward, the clock goes forward one hour.” Going backwards in the weather means it’s getting colder and moving forwards means it’s getting warmer.
