Summertime

Summertime

Why move the clock forward one hour?

We have been using these times in the Netherlands since the oil crisis of 1977. This way we can enjoy the outdoor light longer in the summer months and save a lot of energy. By setting the clock forward an hour, it takes longer before it gets light in the morning and it takes longer in the evening before it gets dark again. Not only in the Netherlands, but also in no fewer than 70 other countries, the clocks are changed twice a year. Do you find it difficult to remember whether the clock should go forward or backward? Then try to remember this mnemonic: In spring, not only the weather, but also the clocks go forward one hour.

Our southern neighbors in Belgium have to move the clock forward one hour at exactly the same time, but they have come up with a different name for it: Belgians call it summer time.

When does daylight saving time start in 2024?

Daylight saving time always starts on the last Sunday in March. The exact date on which this time starts therefore varies every year. On the last Sunday of October, summer time changes to winter time. Officially, you have to move the clock forward one hour to 3 am at 2 am on Saturday night. So your weekend will last an hour less. We have been using these times in the Netherlands since the oil crisis of 1977. This way we can enjoy the outdoor light for longer in the summer months and save a lot of energy.
